8 Days Chasing Sunsets in Santorini
Honestly didn't expect Santorini to be this walkable. Skipped the tour buses, did most of this on foot or with one boat day. Wine was a happy accident — don't skip Day 3.

Firostefani Central Square
Went before breakfast crowds hit, glad I did — had the whole path to myself.
Roovio
Quieter cousin of Fira, just a 10-minute walk along the caldera path but a world away from the crowds. The square itself is small — a handful of cafés, a church, and that jaw-dropping caldera view stretching out below. Sunset here is honestly underrated; everyone rushes to Oia and misses that Firostefani gets almost the same sky with a fraction of the people. Good spot to just sit with a coffee or a glass of wine and let the evening happen.
Great views. Park bench overlooking the cliffside in the shade of a Mediterranean pine tree for having a rest while trekking in Santorini.
Incredible view
Akrotiri
More interesting than I expected, but shade is limited — bring water.
Roovio
Often called the "Minoan Pompeii," and it lives up to it. A remarkably preserved Bronze Age settlement, buried under volcanic ash and now covered by a modern shelter that lets you walk right through ancient streets, staircases, and pottery still sitting where they were left thousands of years ago. It's more raw archaeology than polished museum — no dramatic ruins-against-blue-sky postcard shots, since it's indoors under a roof. But the sense of walking through a frozen moment in time is hard to
Ambrosia Restaurant
Booked same-day and still got a table with the view, lucky I guess.
Roovio
One of Oia's most talked-about fine dining spots, built into the cliffside with a small panoramic terrace and two intimate indoor "cave" dining rooms filled with antiques. There are two seatings a day, and candlelit tables overlook the caldera and volcano. Reviewers consistently praise the setting as one of the most iconic dining spots in Santorini, with refined Mediterranean cuisine and standout dishes like ceviche, lobster, and beef fillet. It's on the pricier side, and terrace tables can be s
Lovely dinner. We had muscles and shrimps which was very tasty. Steak for main was spot on. Cooked well and sauce was spot onm Knowledgeable about wines, nice touches with a glass off prosecco and couple off free breads and dip. Would definitely go back. You need to book in advance, by going in or calling up.
We ate here last night. Managed to get a table without reservation which was lucky as the place was very busy. But the staff made it feel like you were the only ones there. So attentive and informative on local wines and produce. The cerviche was to die for and the mushroom risotto is a must. Highly recommended
Great food and experience! This place is small and a bit hidden, but that’s what makes it a gem. Should definitely give it a try if in Oia as a special romantic dinner. The owner was very helpful making reservations and the restaurant staff was extremely attentive.
I had the civeche to start and it was phenomenal. The views are spectacular and exactly what you are looking for Oia, Santorini. Book it. I was able to get a reservation 2 days in advance.
The food was fine and the service was good But the first impression was awful I made a reservation through website and the minimum charge per person is 60euros If you made a reservation, the restaurant will give you the WORST table lol Better walk-in or go other restaurant
Fira
Harder than the reviews made it sound, wear real shoes not sandals.
Roovio
Santorini's capital and the busiest hub on the island — for good reason. Perched right on the caldera edge, Fira has that classic postcard mix of whitewashed houses, blue domes, and narrow winding lanes stacked above the sea. It's the most convenient base if you want restaurants, shops, nightlife, and easy transport to everywhere else on the island, but that convenience comes with crowds, especially when cruise ships dock and the cable car line to the old port gets long. The caldera-side walk fr
Blue Dolphins Santorini
Everyone stops here, worth the 2 min wait for a clean shot.
Roovio
A small, boutique cliffside hotel tucked into quieter Firostefani, just a short walk from Fira's main square. It's a small property with nine unique rooms and suites, each named for a Greek island, without a pool or restaurant, but with spectacular caldera and coastline views. Guests consistently rave about the setting — watching cruise ships and the classic white-and-blue Santorini buildings from private balconies. Breakfast is a highlight, often served on a whitewashed rooftop patio with panor
I don’t write many hotel reviews. In this case, it’s a pleasure. My wife and I loved our three-night stay at the Blue Dolphins Hotel and Villas in Santorini. We stayed in the Mykonos room, which gave us a fabulous view of the caldera from the room’s balcony. There are a lot of steps, but we are in our 70s and handled them just fine. The staff helped us with our bags when we checked in/out. Christina, the Blue Dolphins’ manager, and her associate, Harris, are extremely nice. Christina offered suggestions, booked our ferry and airport transfers, and arranged taxi service for us to and from Oia. The Blue Dolphins is only a 15-minute walk to Fira. You can walk to an excellent restaurant called the Taverna Romantica in 7 minutes. Santorini was a bucket-list trip for us. It wasn’t crowded at all when we visited in early April, and the Blue Dolphins Hotel was perfect!
Love this hotel. It has a breathtaking view, and it was enough to stay and see the sunset and night view in Fira. Harris who is the manager of this hotel, he is really thoughtful person. Always care about, and even something miscommunication was happend with us, he was well explained. Interior and convenience was also great. This modern style of the building is much satisfied. Sometimes Santorini’s hotel is bad with reason of ‘old and it is good for it’, I don’t think so. Hotel has to be makes harmonized between convenience and mood, especially in here I think, and this hotel well did this.
We just spent 3 nights in a family suite of this so called hotel. room rate charged was 200 euros/ day Before our arrival they were very concerned about our transfer from port to the hotel since according to them transport is hard to find in Santorini !!!! They quoted a rate of 55 euros for private transfer from the port which we did by booking ourselves in 35 euros Now the trickiest part is that its not a proper hotel, there is nobody in reception from 9 pm to 9 am. The lights of our room went out in the very first night @ 10 .30 pm. There was nobody to help us. The reception room was closed with 3 phone numbers pasted as emergency contact. We called, messaged all the 3 numbers frantically but nobody answered. We got a reply to our WhatsApp in early morning- “ is everything alright? “ ….. this is their level of service !!!!! Breakfast is served in room , nobody asks you about your preferences or allergies Almost the same items are forced on you every morning. And beware of the steps , there is no porter in the hotel. So better avoid if you cannot carry your own luggage up and down the stairs Our trip to Greece was absolutely fantastic except this sham of a Hotel
Great place for the view, comfort, and price, plus you get a delicious breakfast set up amidst the vast blue expanse. Especially romantic for enjoying the island... highly recommended.
This was the perfect spot as the view was breath-taking and is close to restaurants and shops. It was a nice and quiet place that allowed me to have a relaxing time. The breakfast was fantastic and tasted delicious. Christina was very helpful each day with planning events and sites to visit. The staff was considerate and very nice. Special thanks to Ada, Nico, and Mario for being helpful and driving me around town! The spa and massage were delightful! Of course, the sunset was amazing. I would definitely stay here again.
Castle of Oia
Got there 45 min early and still had to squeeze in. Worth it though.
Roovio
Santorini's single most famous sunset spot, and it earns the hype even with the crowds. Built by the Venetians in the 15th century as a defensive fortress against pirate raids, the ruins now sit right on the caldera's rim with sweeping views over the sea and surrounding islets. Entry is free, and there's no ticket needed for the ruins themselves. The catch: it gets extremely crowded, so arriving at least an hour before sunset is basically mandatory if you want a decent view. Visiting in the morn
FREE to enter, with beautiful views 0f around 270 degrees over the sea this old castle has only the walls standing but before you get to the castle if you take the right hand down the steps through the little gate way it brings you to a little church and and old building where not to many people ventured. In the old building there's also some amazing views. We'll worth the effort to find to gain some lovely photos.
Get there before 8:00 am for less crowds otherwise it’s too busy! 9:30-10ish am cruise people start coming. It’s on the far end of the city but go here 1st and then go back towards the other photo spots in town. It’s easy to stop and keep taking photos along the way, which isn’t a problem. However, for a more personal experience, that’s my recommendation.
Perched on the cliffs of Oia, the Castle of Oia (Κάστρο Οίας) is a breathtaking Venetian ruin that offers one of Santorini’s most magical experiences. The ancient stone walls frame sweeping views of the caldera and the endless Aegean Sea, especially stunning at sunset when the sky ignites in fiery hues. What truly enchants is the surrounding Cycladic beauty: pristine whitewashed walls glowing under the sun, perfectly contrasted by the iconic blue domes of nearby churches. This classic white-and-blue palette creates a postcard-perfect scene that feels both timeless and dreamlike. Whether wandering the ruins by day or joining the sunset crowd, the castle delivers romance, history, and pure visual poetry in one.
This is the perfect spot to watch the sunset in Santorini. The place gets super crowded during sunset, and all the bars and restaurants become really busy. So, it's best to arrive early to grab a good spot.
Oia is absolutely breathtaking – one of the most beautiful and picturesque villages I've ever seen! The whitewashed buildings, iconic blue domes, charming narrow alleys, and stunning views over the caldera make every corner feel like a postcard. To fully explore Oia and walk from one end to the other (including the castle ruins, windmills, and all the hidden spots), you should allow at least 2 hours. It’s surprisingly spread out along the cliffside, with plenty of ups and downs, photo stops, and little shops to wander through. If you're catching the sunset, add extra time to find a good spot! Highly recommend visiting early in the morning or late afternoon to beat the crowds. Oia is pure magic – don't miss it!
Vineyard Houses Santorini
Didn't know Santorini even made wine before this trip.
Roovio
A peaceful, boutique retreat tucked in Akrotiri — just 900 meters from the Akrotiri archaeological site and 1.3 km from Red Beach. Suites come with private pools, jetted tubs, and premium bedding, offering a tranquil escape near Caldera Beach with continental breakfast and spa treatments. Guests often highlight the location as close enough to everything worth seeing yet peaceful and private enough to feel like their own oasis. One reviewer specifically praised host Matthew, calling the stay unfo
The house was located very conveniently, 5 mins away by car from the airport and within walking distance of the nearest bus stop and a supermarket. When we arrived, the place was ready for check-in much earlier and it was squeaky clean! Bonus points for good water pressure in the shower, too. We loved the private pool and the fact that we could relax there each day. Now, a special mention to our host, Anna, who was definitely the nicest and most welcoming host I have ever met. She waited for us when we arrived to show us around the house and give us tips about the island (they were very well needed) and her overall attitude during our stay was nothing short of amazing. Thank you again so much for hosting us and we will surely visit again!
Thank you for everything. Anna was on hand to make sure everything was perfect with the stay. Beautiful design , really comfortable beds and always clean. Very central but also very private. We highly recommend it!!
Beautiful place in Santorini, very relaxing and quiet location. We truly recommend this place! The owner was very kind and attentive at all times.
Beautiful house.!! Thank you so much
Anna was extremely welcoming and helpful. We were able to arrive early and our departure was also flexible. The accommodation is quiet and the pool is lovely. Other villages are easily accessible and close by car. Everything was perfect. We highly recommend it.
Santorini Wine Villa
The Assyrtiko was the one I keep thinking about.
Roovio
Boutique villa-style stay tucked in Santorini's wine country, in the tranquil village of Megalochori — the heart of the island's wine region, away from the bustling caldera crowds yet still within close reach of all major attractions. The setting leans into that slower, wine-country pace: the village has a welcoming central square as its beating heart, where locals and visitors gather at the nearby Raki restaurant. Villas here favor privacy and authenticity over the postcard caldera-view density
We spend 4 amazing nights at Wine Villa, It's brand new we were among the first guests! A very good base for explore Fira and the stunning views. Jacuzzi was large and warm enough and the place so romantic. The host helped us with our suitcases that were stuck in another airport during transit. Very helpful. And of course the wine of Santorini!
2 couples, we spent 3 nights in the villa. We were the second visitors because is brand new! The atmosphere is gr8, traditional Santorini winery modernly renovated. And a few minutes walk from fabulous Caldera views at Fira. Our friends are wine lovers and they are excited by the rare wines they discovered at the Villa, they told us its impossible to find that old vintages anywhere in the island. Cheers!
We were lucky to find such a beautiful place so close to Fira center. For me as a wine lover it was surprise to find such gems in one place. We bought 3 rare bottles Santorini wine to share with friends back home!
We stayed 3 nights with the family. Perfect base to explore Fira and caldera views with many options of restaurants, cafes etc. We also bought some rare wines you couldn't find anywhere on the island. An overall great stay!!!
One family with a child. Very lucky we were the first to get in, the gave us a special price for this. Everything is new. Marios the host is a nice guy. We really enjoyed the hot tab all together in the afternoons. The kid didn’t want to get out. There is a mini market nearby but the center of fira is so close by foot. The design of the place is typical Aegean sea. Very quite surroundings. We even cooked at home since there is all the equipment there!
Red Beach Viewpoint
Path down is steep and loose gravel, took it slow.
Roovio
One of Santorini's most striking natural sights — towering red, iron-rich volcanic cliffs rising about 100 meters above the shoreline, with a sharp contrast between deep red rock, dark sand, and blue-green water that hits harder in person than in photos. The classic postcard shot everyone shares is actually taken from the viewpoint trail above the beach, not from the sand itself — so even if you skip the descent, you're not missing the iconic view. The path down is genuinely rocky, and the cliff
We came from the village side. There are a few parking lots, but it was already busy when the season started. After a short hike you had a stunning view and could also enter the red beach from this side. The red colour and the rock formation is stunning, no matter if you come there by car or visit from afar via boat.
You can walk up to a certain point easily. Most people turn back from there. We went down to the beach which is a bit challenging walk down. The beach itself is small pebble stones and no sand.
The government must pay and employ the musician who plays at the entrance and creates a wonderful atmosphere at the entrance to the beach.
Worth the stop! Incredible view!
After using the officially marked hiking trail from the nearby parking lot, a wonderful view on the Red beach and its bay will open up. It is not recommended to walk or climb off the path because of the danger of falling stones.
